Actin and Myosin in the Mitotic Spindle

چکیده

plus end–binding protein CLASP. Mitochondrial aggregation could not be recapitulated by mutants of either the motor protein dynein or other plus end–binding proteins. The Peg1 mutation did not affect the cytoskeleton, and the changes were independent of the cell cycle, suggesting the aggregation was not due to other changes in microtubules. Peg1 was found to be a mitochondrial peripheral membrane protein. As CLASP links membranes to microtubules in mammalian cells, Chiron proposes a similar function for Peg1 in yeast, and suggests that it hitches mitochondria to microtubules. Chiron, S., et al. 2008. Myosin-10 and actin filaments are essential for mitotic spindle function

Mitotic spindles are microtubule-based structures responsible for chromosome partitioning during cell division. Although the roles of microtubules and microtubule-based motors in mitotic spindles are well established, whether or not actin filaments (F-actin) and F-actin-based motors (myosins) are required components of mitotic spindles has long been controversial. Based on the demonstration tha...

Mitosis: New Roles for Myosin-X and Actin at the Spindle

Roles for actin and myosin in positioning mitotic spindles in the cell are well established. A recent study of myosin-X function in early Xenopus embryo mitosis now reports that this unconventional myosin is required for pole integrity and normal spindle length by localizing to poles and exerting pulling forces on actin filaments within the spindle.

Adducin-1 is essential for mitotic spindle assembly through its interaction with myosin-X

Mitotic spindles are microtubule-based structures, but increasing evidence indicates that filamentous actin (F-actin) and F-actin-based motors are components of these structures. ADD1 (adducin-1) is an actin-binding protein that has been shown to play important roles in the stabilization of the membrane cortical cytoskeleton and cell-cell adhesions. In this study, we show that ADD1 associates w...

Myosin-1C associates with microtubules and stabilizes the mitotic spindle during cell division.

The mitotic spindle in eukaryotic cells is composed of a bipolar array of microtubules (MTs) and associated proteins that are required during mitosis for the correct partitioning of the two sets of chromosomes to the daughter cells. In addition to the well-established functions of MT-associated proteins (MAPs) and MT-based motors in cell division, there is increasing evidence that the F-actin-b...

Adducin-1 moonlights at the mitotic spindle A n actin-binding protein helps shape the mitotic spindle, Chan et al. report. Researchers long thought that actin and microtubules performed different tasks during mitosis. They believed that micro tubules formed the mitotic spindle that pulls chromosomes apart, whereas actin joined with myosin to produce the contractile furrow that separates the mot...

Actomyosin-Dependent Cortical Dynamics Contributes to the Prophase Force-Balance in the Early Drosophila Embryo

BACKGROUND The assembly of the Drosophila embryo mitotic spindle during prophase depends upon a balance of outward forces generated by cortical dynein and inward forces generated by kinesin-14 and nuclear elasticity. Myosin II is known to contribute to the dynamics of the cell cortex but how this influences the prophase force-balance is unclear. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Here we investigated this qu...
